The second day of 2011 budget hearings conducted by the Greene County Council saw two additional full-time positions be cut from the payroll.
Total cuts made in the two days of hearings amount to $744,925.
Before the hearings began Tuesday, the council had a goal of cutting $650,000 from the requested General Fund budgets that are within the tax levy, which amounts to $8,137,000. …<more>

Greene County Emergency Management Agency Director Roger Axe was on the hot seat during the 2011 budget hearings Wednesday.
There was a long discussion with Axe initiated by the Greene County Council about the operation of the EMS office and the council actually conducted two separate votes on reducing staffing and hours in his office.
But the votes but fell short of the votes needed to institute any changes in the coming year’s budget.
Councilman Jerry Frye said he had checked around and many counties the size of Greene do not have a full-time emergency management agency director.

Bloomfield PD will accept applications until Oct. 8

The president of the Bloomfield Town Council wants more time to accept applications for a vacant deputy town marshal position.
On Wednesday, Aaron Hamm told the Greene County Daily World that applications for a full-time police department position has been extended to Oct. 8.
On Tuesday night, the council agreed to cut off applications this coming Monday, but Hamm said after consideration and discussion with other council members, more time was needed to make sure there was a good field of candidates to select from.
He said there are currently five applicants for the job. …<more>
Scotland to host annual festival Sept. 18

The community of Scotland will celebrate the town’s 175th anniversary in conjunction with this year’s Scotland Festival — which is slated for Sept. 18.
Look for arts, crafts, live music, food and fun along with an “Artists’ Alley” to be a part of the day.
The festival began 46 years ago as an area art show with artists and crafters attending the event, explained Tonjua Toon in a press release on the traditional fun.
“However for the past 10 or so years this event has not happened,” she added. “We are bringing this back to the Scotland Festival this year celebrating 175 years of the town.”
Look for fine arts and crafts to be available for purchase at the Artists’ Alley — which will be located south of the Scotland Hotel. …<more>
Chandler sentenced to four years in case involving battery on officers

Travis Chandler, convicted of battery upon two law enforcement officers, has been sentenced to four years in prison.
Chandler was on trial on seven criminal counts before a 12-member jury in mid-August.
On the third day of the proceeding, the jury returned guilty verdicts on five counts: Trespass, a class A misdemeanor; operating a vehicle while being an habitual traffic violator, a class D felony; two counts of battery upon a law enforcement officer resulting in bodily injury, both as class D felonies; and resisting law enforcement, a class A misdemeanor. …<more>

Jasonville city fire officials have enacted a ban on any kind of outdoor burning until further notice because of the extreme dry conditions.
This includes trash, campfire or any other kinds of burning activities within the city limits.
Officials have no timeline for the burn ban and it could continue on until the area receives a substantial amount of rain. …<more>

A rural Jasonville man was arrested Tuesday night for operating a vehicle while intoxicated after a one-vehicle wreck on County Road 1000W, north of State Road 48, near Jasonville.

Plans are under way and deadlines are approaching for this year’s Jasonville High School-Shakamak High School Homecoming, which will take place Sept. 24-26.
The alumni softball tournament, which will take place Sept. 25-26, is a popular event of the annual celebration.
The alumni softball tournament began in 1983. Every year, each graduating class forms a team to enter into the tournament. If someone has been out of school for more than 20 years and wants to play but their class doesn’t have enough players for a team, they can join the old-timers team.
JHS-SHS Alumni Association President Nancy Enstrom said teams for this year’s tournament must be formed by Sept. 13. A $15 entry fee is required for each player. …<more>
Terre Haute man runs from police

James B. Winfree, 39, Terre Haute, appeared in Greene Superior Court on Wednesday and was charged with felony neglect of a dependent and resisting law enforcement with a vehicle along with driving with a suspended license.
Winfree had allegedly been drinking and was speeding when a cop car got behind him and hit the lights and sirens. Winfree is accused of leading the officer on a chase before ditching the car and taking off through the woods on foot, with his child in tow. …<more>
Bike tour will help Rotary give scholarships

The Linton Rotary Club’s second bike tour will make its way through parts of Greene and Sullivan counties on Saturday.
David Atkins, event organizer, shared details on the 2010 Greene County Rotary Ride — which benefits Linton-Stockton graduating seniors through the Linton Rotary Club scholarship fund.
“Anyone who enjoys riding can participate … it should be an enjoyable event for all and it will help local students,” Atkins explained. “We’ll all start together at Humphreys Park and make our way through town out through Greene-Sullivan State Forest, that’s a beautiful ride in the morning.” …<more>
