By Anna Rochelle SEASON OF GIVING: On behalf of the Pamida Foundation, Bloomfield Pamida Store Manager Judy Hammond (center) presented generous checks to Bloomfield's Community Food Pantry represented by Joe and Jean Burcham (left) and the Family Life Center represented by Dianne Langer (right). Both organizations say the money will help make Christmas brighter for families in need.

Two organizations in Bloomfield got an early Christmas present from the Pamida Foundation to help in their efforts to make the holiday season a little merrier for those in need.

Dianne Langer, director of the Family Life Center, and Joe and Jean Burcham, representing the community food pantry sponsored by several Bloomfield churches, made a trip to the Bloomfield Pamida store this week to accept the generous checks presented by local Store Manager Judy Hammond.

Langer and the Burchams said the two organizations frequently communicate and work together to assist families in need.

Both said the money is going to make a big difference for many families this season and they appreciate the way Pamida gives back to the community.

Langer said the Family Life Center will use the money to supplement their program to provide toys and gifts for children.

The center will assist approximately 140 families during the holiday season.

“We’re buying presents for lots of kids who have special needs and they need special gifts,” said Langer. “The money will be used to shop for those children and buy that one gift that fits their specific needs.”

Langer added that many are not being served by other agencies.

“These are kids that would get missed,” said Langer.

At the community food pantry, where the Burchams are regular volunteers, the money will help provide 50 food baskets to area families and buy supplemental food for the pantry that is not usually donated during food drives.

The pantry is housed at the First Baptist Church in Bloomfield but is sponsored and supported by several churches in the community.

Joe Burcham said the pantry, open from 9-11:30 a.m. on Monday-Thursday, accepts walk-ins and they try to help everyone who comes in and says they need food.

“We hand out 60-75 bags of groceries a week average,” said Burcham, adding that at times they give more.

“Last Wednesday, there were 11 families who came in on just that morning. Then we gave out 62 bags of food on just that one day.”

The pantry also distributes government commodities and they receive meat from the local Greene County Farmers and Hunters Feeding the Hungry (FHFH) program.

Hammond said the money for the donations comes from the Pamida Foundation but as store manager, she helps decide who will receive the holiday contributions.

The Pamida Corporation’s home office is in Omaha, Neb. The Pamida Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit dedicated to improving the lives of citizens in the more than 200 communities where Pamida does business, has funneled millions of dollars back into their communities since 2000.

Bloomfield senior participates in Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade

A Bloomfield Junior-Senior High student got the thrill of her life Thursday when she was able to participate in the famed Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City.

Caitlin Purcell, a senior and captain of the BHS Redliner’s dance group, was among the 700 girls who marched in the three-hour long, nationally televised parade.

The Redliners went to dance camp at Vincennes University last July, which is sponsored by the NDA (National Dance Alliance). While there, the NDA staff nominated her to audition for the All-American Dance Team, and she was selected.

That selection gave her the opportunity to participate in Macy’s parade.

Purcell was also selected last year to the national team and went to Hawaii and performed in the halftime show of Hawaii-Washington State college football game.

This year, the Bloomfield senior was one of 700 girls in this group with only three from Indiana and was selected to be in the front row of the televised performance.

The group consisted of girls from 22 states and three countries.

“Performing in Macy’s Parade was an amazing experience. The girls were great, the crowd was awesome, and the look on the kid’s faces when we would hug them was priceless,” Purcell explained to the Greene County Daily World. “That whole week gave me a glimpse of what a life in dance or musical theater — which is my dream career — in New York City would be like.”

Purcell, who has plans to attend Indiana University at Bloomington and major in psychology and participate with the dance squad, said dancing is a difficult profession, but she likes the challenge and has special motivation.

“It’s a very difficult field to be in, but I love it. I thank God, my Lord and Saviour, who has done so much for me, and without Him, none of this would have been possible. I wouldn’t be the person I am today, and I wouldn’t have experienced all that I have. My younger brother, Dustin, is my hero. He has autism, and he has opened my eyes to many things, taught me many valuable life lessons, and more.”

Purcell is the 17-year-old daughter of Carlena and Tim Purcell of Bloomfield.

Her hobbies include singing, dancing and acting.

Among other school activities, Purcell is president of Strut ‘N Fret (drama club); she Portrayed “Annie” in “Annie Get Your Gun” at Shawnee Theater (school play, November 2009) and “Little Red Riding Hood” in “Into the Woods” (November 2008); she a member of the Spanish Club, FCCLA; Christian Service Club; member of Bloomfield School’s vocal groups Center Stage, Cardinal Song and Joyful Noise; National Honor Society; Booster Club; and attended Teen Student Leadership Academy.

She has a younger brother Dustin Purcell at home and two married half-sisters, Lisa Cain (Michigan) and Julie Evans (Bloomfield).

Her grandparents are Carlos and Darlene Arney of Elnora and Robert and Norma Purcell of Bloomfield.

Her mother said she was proud of the way her daughter represented her town and school.

“This was such an honor and privilege, and she represented Bloomfield well,” Carlena Purcell said, “I know I’m Mom, but she’s quite a gal.”

The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is an annual parade presented by Macy’s Department Store. The tradition started in 1924, tying it for the second-oldest Thanksgiving parade in the United States, tied with America’s Thanksgiving Parade in Detroit.

Performers in the 2009 parade included: Jay Leno, Keke Palmer, the Big Apple Circus, Andrea Bocelli, Boys Like Girls, Alan Cumming, Billy Currington, the cast of Yo Gabba Gabba, The Roots, Jimmy Fallon, Gloria Gaynor, Emily Hughes, Jane Krakowski, Katharine McPhee, the cast of Sesame Street, Mitchel Musso, the Pizzarelli Quartet, Jay Sean, Ziggy Marley and his daughter Judah, and Carly Simon.

New coal mine moving forward; Greene County Council to consider tax abatement

by Greene County Daily World on Nov.30, 2009, under Greene County

Monday, November 30, 2009
By Nick Schneider, Assistant Editor
Greene County Daily World

A proposed underground coal mine in Wright Township received approval for a preliminary designation as an economic revitalization area from the Greene County Council Monday afternoon.

This is the first step for the Lily Group, Inc., of Sullivan, to obtain a requested seven-year tax abatement on equipment and property improvements.

A legal notice outlining the planned action to name the area an economic area will be published in the Greene County Daily World before Dec. 3.

The council will conduct a public hearing at its next meeting at 4 p.m. Monday, Dec. 14 to hear from supporters or remonstrators of the mine project that is expected to employ up to 100 people by May 2011.

Final action on the economic revitalization area and the tax abatement is expected at the Dec. 14 council meeting.

One of the stipulations that the council insisted on the developers including in their final revitalization area and abatement documents is at least 60 percent of the hired employees would be Greene County residents.

Council William “Butch” Brown said, “I’d like to see Greene County people working there.”

When asked if the coal company would put that stipulation ‘in writing” Lily Group Treasurer Cory Smith told the council, “We would have no problem at all making sure that verbiage is in there (the documents).”

The proposed mine is located at the northwest corner of the intersection of County Road 1500 West and County Road 700 North, southwest of Jasonville.

According to the terms of the Notice of Adoption of the Designated Economic Revitalization Area, the tax abatement shall be allowed to Lily Group only if it satisfies the condition that it employ at least 20 persons at the facility by May 1, 2010 and 100 persons at the facility by May 1, 2011.

Lily Group has already received approval from the Greene County Commissioners, who signed off on a federal grant application that will provide the coal company with a $1 million Disaster Recovery Grant to purchase mine equipment.

Smith said permits for the mine site are still pending with that Department of Natural Resources - Division of Mines officials, but he noted that the firm has been notified that the permits are “administratively complete.”

Lily Group has an informal conference set for Jan. 5, 2010 with state officials to finalize the permit process, Smith noted.

Smith, who said no new information was requested, said once all of the engineer amendments are made, he expects the permit process to be wrapped up by mid-January.

Production at the mine is expected in the Spring 2010 and Smith pointed out that a recent study by an independent firm has shown coal reserves that will span a minimum of 20 years.

The firm has about 2,800 acres in its permit application — including 1,400 that Lily owns the mineral right and another 1,400 that they have leased the mineral rights. The company owns about 20 actual acres where the mining operation will be based.

All of the acreage is located in Greene County, Smith said.

Wright Township Trustee Carolyn S. Hubbell attended Monday’s meeting and had questions about the tax abatement and money that would be lost to her township, if the abatement was approved.

Smith reiterated the benefits by saying 60 percent of the 100-person workforce would be Greene County residents, who would have ‘well-paying’ jobs.

He also said the company plans to purchase more than $5 million in production equipment that would be subject to full taxation after the seven-year abatement period passes. During the abatement, the taxes paid would be graduated on an upward percentage scale over the seven years until a 100 percent level in 2017.

Smith also said the company at its own expense is increasing the electrical capacity in the area to accommodate the new equipment, which will have a benefit to the nearby town of Jasonville.

Smith pointed out that with the planned abatement, the company would have seven years to build the company and 13 years to pay full county taxes.

Council president John Wilkes noted that the county ‘had been burned’ on some previous tax abatements and he wanted to make sure the permitting process was in order.

“We do need the jobs and we want the jobs,” he added.

Smith stressed that the county was at no liability on the project.

“There is no liability whatsoever for the county, he said.

County Council Attorney Marvin Abshire agreed and said the county is out nothing if the deal to start the mine falls through.

“If things fall apart before they get started, from the council’s perspective you’ve gained nothing and you’ve lost nothing except for the time spent on this,” Abshire said.

Worthington man faces felony charges after domestic dispute

by Greene County Daily World on Nov.30, 2009, under Worthington

Greene County Daily World

Michael K. Arthur, 27, Worthington, was arrested Friday and charged Monday with two felonies including strangulation and battery in connection with a domestic incident. This is not the first time he’s been in jail after police were called to a report of a domestic battery.

Arthur was arraigned in Greene Superior Court Monday on class D felony domestic battery in the presence of a child under 16 years of age, class D felony strangulation, class A misdemeanor battery resulting in bodily injury and class A misdemeanor invasion of privacy.

He was booked into the Greene County Jail by Reserve Officer Jason Wilson of the Worthington Police Department (WPD) and was initially held without bond pending his appearance in court.

Arthur was also arrested in August after police responded to a report of another assault in Worthington.

Following Arthur’s court appearance on Monday, a court official said Arthur was currently on probation and a petition to revoke his probation was being filed. A hearing on that petition to revoke has been scheduled on Friday.

In the latest incident, WPD Deputy Marshal Don Richardson was advised of a possible assault and was dispatched to a residence around 4:50 a.m. Friday.

Minutes later, he spoke with a woman who had multiple injuries about her face.

In a probable cause affidavit, Richardson wrote that there were abrasions on the left side of her head and face, the right jaw, the bridge of her nose and a red mark on her neck. The victim said the abrasion on her nose happened one week earlier in a different incident, but that Arthur was also the cause.

According to the affidavit, there were three small children in the residence when the latest incident occurred. An argument reportedly began about how to discipline a child who would not go to sleep.

Arthur allegedly struck the woman and she almost went unconscious, then he got her in a choke hold which also almost caused her to lose consciousness.

The affidavit states there was a no-contact order in force against Arthur and the victim was the petitioner.

Arthur reportedly had fled the scene after the battery but officers located him at another residence.

A warrant was also out for Arthur’s arrest in connection with yet another incident.

A 21-year-old Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) has been accused of stealing a 14-karat gold ring with three diamonds from a jewelry box in the residence where she was working as a home health caregiver.Mallory M. Frye of Linton was arrested late Friday and booked into the Greene County Jail by Reserve Officer Brock Garrison of the Linton Police Department.

The theft allegedly occurred between 6-9 p.m. on Nov. 19 when Frye was working at a residence on NE A St. in Linton.

A police report written by LPD Det. Josh Goodman, the investigating officer, states that Frye started working in the home on Nov. 16.

The ring went missing from a jewelry box three days later and Frye was reportedly the only person with access to the ring.

The report says Frye was confronted about the missing ring and after that, she did not return to work.

The 14-karat gold ring had one large diamond set in the middle of two smaller diamonds.

Information about what agency Frye might have been working for and whether or not the ring has been recovered was not released by the police department.

Frye was held on a preliminary charge of theft, a class D felony, and her bond was set at $4,000.

On Saturday, she bonded out of jail and was scheduled to appear in court for an initial hearing on Friday.

Power will be out in Linton on Sunday

Monday, November 30, 2009
By Timberly Ferree, Staff Writer
Greene County Daily World

Look for a city-wide power outage in Linton on Sunday.

The outage is scheduled from midnight to 8 a.m. and will allow Duke Energy to install new equipment as well as conduct routine maintenance.

“They’ve (Duke Energy) got two new switches to install at the Vincennes Street substation and work to do on the switches down by the old GE building,” explained Nick House, who serves as the supervisor of Linton’s Electric Department.

The Linton Electric Department will also take advantage of the power outage.

“In the meantime we’ll do maintenance too. We’ll be working on all of our substations,” House added.

The scheduled power outage should be the final one.

“This should be it,” House said.

The Linton Police Department will have extra patrols during the power outage.

The last scheduled power outage for the city was Nov. 1. At that time, work included maintenance on substations and on lines.

“We got everything we needed to get done at the time (Nov. 1),” he explained.

By Timberly Ferree NEW OFFICER: Nick Yingling recently joined the ranks of the Linton Police Department. He started Sept. 1 after spending time with the Linton Fire Department.

There’s a new police officer in town.

Nick Yingling recently joined the ranks of the Linton Police Department after spending some time with the Linton Fire Department.

Yingling started Sept. 1 and is currently learning the ropes.

“It’s still a learning process. But I’m doing fine. (LPD Officer) Chad Crynes is my training officer. He’s doing a great job. He’s a great teacher,” Yingling explained.

Yingling’s wanted to be a police officer since he was a young boy. He grew up with a father who was a reserve officer.

He also has previous law enforcement experience as a reserve officer.

“I was a reserve in Bloomfield for two years,” Yingling explained.

He hopes to remain an officer at the LPD for several years.

“He (Yingling) was previously employed with the (Linton) fire department and has recently moved over to the (Linton) police department,” Linton Police Chief Troy Jerrell said. “We did a swap. Jayson Smith went to the fire and Nick (Yingling) came to the police.”

So, it’s not additional manpower it’s more like a trade.

“He has a law enforcement training background and has been through basic prior to coming to us. We sent him through basic again,” Jerrell said. “He also has experience and has trained as a police officer. At one time he was going to be a reserve here.”

So far, all is well with the new officer.

“He’s expressed to me that his heart’s always been in law enforcement. So far, he’s done a really good job for us and we think we’ll have good things come from him,” Jerrell said.

Yingling resides in Linton with his wife Jerisa Yingling.
