New Fire Chief for Bloomfield

by Chris Buhneing on Dec.31, 2008, under Bloomfield News

Wednesday, December 31, 2008

There’s been a change in ranks at the Bloomfield Volunteer Fire Department.Skyler Pittman was recently voted in to serve as the department’s fire chief and Chris Stahl will serve as assistant fire chief– effective Jan. 1, 2009.

In 2008, Pittman served as the assistant under Fire Chief Eric Alano.

Alano recently decided to step down from the position– which he served for two years.

Alano explained, “I just decided I couldn’t afford to do it. We have elections every year and I decided I wasn’t going to run…There’s too much time involved.”

But, Alano will remain as a volunteer with the department.

Pittman– who was unavailable for comment at the time– has served with the department for quite awhile, Alano noted.

“He (Pittman) started as a junior (firefighter),” he added, noting that was some time ago.

As for Chris Stahl, he also has several years of experience with the Bloomfield Volunteer Fire Department.

“He (Stahl) was chief when I came on in ‘94,” Alano said.

Candidates take oaths of office in ceremony at the courthouse

by Chris Buhneing on Dec.30, 2008, under Greene County

Tuesday, December 30, 2008

Greene County elected officials took their oaths of office on Tuesday morning in a ceremony at the courthouse in Bloomfield. 1189200-h1

It was day for handshakes, hugs, posing for photographs and goodwill wishes.

The event is largely ceremonial and is not required to take office.

Thursday (Jan. 1), the job of each officeholder gets underway officially.

The oaths of office were administered to seven officials by Greene Circuit Judge Erik Allen.

Allen called the ceremony “a joyful occasion”.

“It does have an official reason. Oaths will be signed which is required. It is very important document that will be filed with the appropriate government agency. A big part of it is ceremonial as well. Today is to celebrate accomplishments and look ahead to the challenges that will be coming and just celebrate the opportunities that we have for public service,” Allen told the gathering in the packed Circuit Courtroom. “It is a fun informal event.”

County officials who raised their right hands and affirmed to carry out their respective duties included: Superior Court Judge Dena Martin (R), Greene County Commissioners Steve Lindsey (D) and Kermit Holtsclaw (D), Greene County Councilmen at Large - Jerry Frye (R) and Rae Della Cravens (D), Greene County Treasurer Shelby Meurer (D) and Greene County Surveyor Ira ‘Butch’ Wright (R).

County Councilman at Large William ‘Butch’ Brown (D) did not participate in the ceremony, but he can still take office as planned by simply signing his oath of office affidavit and filing it with the clerk’s office.

All the positions except Superior Court Judge are for four-year terms. Martin’s term will span six years.

The field of elected officials includes two who won re-election on Nov. 4 — Brown — for a third term — and Wright, for a second term.

Following the ceremony, officials, family friends and guests enjoyed light refreshments just outside the courtroom. Some of the newly-elected officials toured their offices and the court room where they will be working officially starting on Friday morning — the first day the courthouse is open in the new year.

Owen Valley dominates Cardinals

by Chris Buhneing on Dec.29, 2008, under Bloomfield News

Monday, December 29, 2008

TERRE HAUTE — The Bloomfield Cardinals boys basketball team wrapped up play in the Pizza Hut Wabash Valley Classic with a 1-2 record after falling to Owen Valley 66-34 here Monday.

The Cardinals missed their first eight shots from the field and fell behind 13-1 after the first eight minutes of play and was never able to recover in the lopsided loss. Bloomfield had defeated the Patriots a little over a week ago at home 45-44 in overtime.

“When you fall behind early like that it makes it extra tough on your team,” Cardinals head coach Ron McBride said. “Owen Valley is a good ball club and I just felt like they out competed us today. We did not compete very hard. That is the most disappointing thing today.”

After the first quarter the Cardinals played the Patriots even in the second quarter, but was outscored by 18 more points in the second half.

“Winning teams make in-game adjustments, and we did not make the necessary adjustments here tonight,” McBride said. “You have to be able to make adjustments during the game and that was the difference in the game.”

McBride also pointed out that in order for his team to be successful they need to have a ‘gut check’ when things are not going so well.

“You have to be able to dig down deep and play through the adversity when things are not going your way,” the veteran head coach said. “If you don’t want to play harder then it makes it that much more difficult to make a comeback.”

The Cardinals had some good looks early on in the game that could have provided a different outcome had those shots fallen.

“We missed some easy shots there early,” McBride said. “If we make some of those shots you are looking at a different outcome possibly. When you fall behind double digits early like that it makes you play a different style of game.”

The Cardinals fired up 49 shots in the game, connecting on just 11. The Patriots on the other hand seemed like they could not miss, as they connected on 24 of 33 shots for the game.

For the first time this season no Cardinal player reached double digits in scoring. Andy Cochrane and Gavin Thompson led the Cardinals with seven points apiece, while Mitch Hobson came off the bench for six points. Rick Tally and Kurt Schulte each posted four points, while Chris Babcock, Holden Hamm and Graham Helms added two points in the loss.

“One positive we take out of this game is we were able to play some other players that do not get that much playing time,” McBride said. “That will only make us better as the year goes on.”

Dayton Gobert led three Patriots in double digits with 16 points, while Cody Vest and Randy Lientz scored 15 and 11 points respectively.

WestGate official lobbies for Gremore before crucial vote by the commissioners

by Chris Buhneing on Dec.29, 2008, under Greene County

Monday, December 29, 2008

1189106-l

Rural Bloomfield resident Ron Toon appealed to the Greene County Commissioners on Monday morning to forget about politics and “do the right thing.”

Toon asked the commissioners to vote for Republican Ken Gremore, who was in a deadlock tie for the third at-large seat on the Greene County Council with Democrat Rae Della Cravens.

Prior to Monday morning’s vote, Toon was given the chance to speak.

Toon serves on the WestGate Authority — the governmental agency in charge of operation of the WestGate at Crane Technology Park at Crane Village.

Toon told the commissioners that Gremore, in his role as a county councilman for the last four years, has played a key role in the WestGate project. Gremore supervised the running of a sewer line to the Greene County sector of the tech park — saving the county at least $100,000.

“I’ve looked at this thing from a lot of different sides and I understand political affiliation. I just don’t understand political affiliations to the depth that it has taken our county in recent weeks,” Toon stated. “I want you to know that I have nothing against Rae Della Cravens. But what I want to tell you to do what is best for the county. All of you folks right here were elected to serve for the county and the county council was.

“We came down to a tie here. We came down to looking at a team membership here that we ought to really examine … we’ve got a man on the county council that brings probably 35 years of management expertise worth millions of dollars. … We’ve got this man and he’s got a lot of time on his hands and he’s an excellent person and he shows up and serves the county.

“When you start down with the vote today, I’m going to ask you look for the county — what the county needs … you might want to look at expertise. I’m not a big fan of the Republican Party in this county. And I’m not a big fan of the Democrat Party. Democrats kind of showed me in their vote on the council that there are no stand-up people left. Republicans showed me how you can walk arm and arm with a man and have a ‘no vote’ list against him. A lot of people don’t know that. We’ve got a chance to rectify a terrific wrong. It will hurt Rae Della Cravens if you went that way. This lady serves us well in a lot of capacities. But in the capacity of expertise that we need, this is no contest.”

Commissioner’s President Bart Beard acknowledged that both Gremore and Cravens are “excellent candidates.” but he added, “We have got to make a choice.”

With that, Beard and Bill Sipes — both Democrats, voted in favor of Cravens.

Republican Kathy Crouch voted for Gremore.

Bloomfield board receives info on proposed projects

by Chris Buhneing on Dec.29, 2008, under Bloomfield News

Monday, December 29, 2008

Information on the proposed tennis court, bus barn and playground renovation was provided during the Bloomfield School Board meeting Monday.Bud Erny, of Erny and Associates, provided the update as well as some estimated figures.

Erny’s preliminary plan included five tennis courts, a basketball court and a new long jump.

This part of the project would add two new tennis courts, resurface the current ones, put in new bleachers, fencing and lights, among additional work such as painting and miscellaneous repairs, he said. The estimated cost for this portion of the project is $139,600.

The new bus barn was estimated to cost $167,100. Work would include excavation, fill, tree removal, site preparation, construction of a post frame barn, electrical, among others.

The size of the bus barn would be 48 X 87 and include six bays.

When it comes to the playground — near the current bus barn — Erny noted almost half an acre for the area.

Site preparation, stone removal, demolition of the current bus barn, mulch, top soil and additional repairs for the playground include an estimated cost of $36,300, he said.

When it comes to new playground equipment — which is optional — Erny also shared a few figures.

He suggested two new benches at $300 a piece, a new climber at $2,500, a new swing set at $1,000, a new slide at $3,500, eight new basketball goals at $1,000 a piece and a new play challenger structure at $15,000. Total cost of the playground amenities was estimated at $35,000.

Estimated cost of the entire project — tennis courts, bus barn and playground — with no amenities was $343,000. Estimated cost with amenities was $378,000.

Erny indicated that he was not finished with a cost estimate of building six tennis courts north of State Road 54.

Bloomfield School declares emergency to get air unit fixed

by Chris Buhneing on Dec.29, 2008, under Bloomfield News

Monday, December 29, 2008

It was budget and financial business during the Bloomfield School Board’s Monday meeting.

In a 7-0 vote, the board approved a resolution to declare an emergency due to the loss of a high school air-conditioning compressor.

School Board President Marvin Helms cited Indiana Code 36-1-12-9 which authorizes a political subdivision upon a declaration of emergency to contract for a public work project without advertising for bids if bids or quotes are invited from at least two persons who deal in the type of public work required to be done.

The board received three quotes for replacing the compressor and decided to award the work to the lowest bidder — which was Graves Plumbing for $130,481.

After establishing the emergency, the board then approved the use of $132,481 to hire Graves Plumbing to replace the air-conditioning condenser and chiller.

The additional funds approved for the project will cover repair costs which may result from yard and sidewalk damage, noted Superintendent Dan Sichting.

“It (resolution) allows us to go ahead and do it quickly … we took the best quote we got and we will cure the problem we have,” Sichting explained. “We have an air-conditioning compressor that is almost 25 years old. It’s past its life expectancy.”

The money will be taken from the emergency allocation of the 2008 capital projects fund.

The school district has $133,896.56 of the 2008 emergency allocation remaining in the 2008 capital projects fund.

In other financial business, the board approved the resolution to extend a short-term transfer of funds from the rainy day fund and capital projects fund to the debt service fund, retirement severance bond debt service fund, and transportation fund.

Sichting explained, “In September we received 67 percent of the property tax levy. We still had 43 percent that was outstanding. We are supposed to get our settlement today. But at this point I do not know if we will have a levy shortfall or not.”

The school must make four substantial payments by Dec. 31, he noted.

“Because of the economic times that we’re involved with right now we’re not sure if we have a levy shortfall,” he said. “This (transfer) gives us some flexibility in case we do have that levy shortfall.”

In other business:

* The board approved Carl Kerns as an assistant baseball coach for the current school year.

BREAKING NEWS: Shepherd replaced as highway superintendent

by Chris Buhneing on Dec.29, 2008, under Greene County

Monday, December 29, 2008

There will be a leadership change starting Friday in the Greene County Highway Department.Basil Shepherd, who has served as Greene County Highway Department Superintendent for the last three years, is expected to be replaced when the commissioners meet Friday at 9:30 a.m. for an annual reorganizational session.

Beard, along with newly elected commissioners Steve Lindsey and Kermit Holtsclaw, will elect officers and make their annual appointments at that meeting.

The Greene County Daily World has learned that Shepherd will not be re-appointed and will be replaced by former county highway department superintendent Mike Hennette.

While the vote won’t be official until Friday, the change was confirmed Monday morning by Greene County Commissioner’s president Bart Beard.

Beard said, “He (Hennette) is what we are looking for. We have got to get this thing turned around and we can’t get that from within the department.”

Shepherd, who has been told he will not be re-appointed to the superintendent’s job, will stay on the department as a mechanic, according to Beard.

When contacted on Monday, Shepherd, who lives in Lyons, also confirmed that he had been told by the commissioners that he would not be re-appointed.

“I have enjoyed the job and met a lot of nice people,” Shepherd said.

He added with a laugh that the job also afforded him the chance to see a lot of Greene County.

“I sure know Greene County better now,” Shepherd said.

Shepherd said he didn’t want to comment further about the leadership change.

Hennette, a 1970 Linton-Stockton High School graduate, is retired and most recently served three years as Greene County Highway Superintendent — leaving the appointive office at the end of 2005. Prior to that he worked two years with the Indiana Department of Transportation out of the Vincennes District office.

Hennette also worked in middle management for Peabody Coal Company for nearly 30 years.

Hennette, who lives in Linton, is married to Rita Hennette. She currently serves as Greene County Recorder.

The Hennettes have two sons.
