White River Valley School District is now offering a full-day early learning experience and care for children ages 3 to 6.
Little Stars Early Learning Center will open its doors on Tuesday and sign-ups are now being taken, explained Liz Tharp, who will serve as the center’s lead teacher.
“I think WRV wanted to make sure they had something in the Lyons area that offered extended care,” she said. “There’s no extended care offered in the (Lyons) area and we want to be able to reach those kids.”
Tharp also stressed the importance of early learning. …<more>

There’s a new doc in town and he’s a White River Valley High School graduate who truly has medicine in his blood.
Pete Powers is now offering his care at Monroe Hospital Primary Care Clinic in Bloomfield.
“I grew up in Lyons, my dad’s a doctor there at the medical clinic, so I grew up around medicine,” Powers explained. “My grandpa was a dentist and my brother and sister are both dentists, so then I decided to go to medical school like dad.”
Powers is a 2004 graduate of Indiana University School of Medicine who is employed as a hospitalist at Monroe Hospital and now resides in Bloomfield.
After graduation, he moved out of state to work on his residency.
Costs cancel proposed all-day kindergarten at Lyons

SWITZ CITY - Financial challenges ended a proposal for a one-year pilot program of full-day kindergarten at Lyons Elementary School, a decision also attributed to increased enrollment which would have meant hiring additional staff.
While White River Valley School Corp. trustees had mulled over the idea of extending kindergarten to a full day at Lyons, and potentially busing over Worthington students whose parents wished them to participate, Superintendent Layton Wall said the move posed too great a cost.
“That was because of the money we lost in funding this year, around $400,000, and that is not counting the money we believe we may lose next year, which is between $400,000 and $500,000,” Wall said. “That will translate to nearly a million dollars in lost revenue.” …<more>

New trustees face Kingergarten questions at WRV

SWITZ CITY - Worthington kindergarteners whose parents prefer them to participate in an all-day pilot program could be bused to Lyons.
Presently, plans call for Lyons Elementary School to attempt the all-day session in response to a small enrollment of about 16 students, White River Valley School Corp. Superintendent Layton Wall said.
Whether that pilot program will ultimately continue remains to be seen after next year.
However, what was intended as an experiment has raised concerns because Worthington Elementary School has around 30 kindergarteners enrolled, but no all-day classes.
Instead, students there will attend a half-day.
That posed problems for school trustees, who understand adding a full day of classes at Worthington also means considerable added costs and two new hires, a teacher and aide. …<more>

If all goes as planned, every one of White River Valley’s Class of 2010 will graduate, even if some finish a bit later than others.
White River Valley School Corporation Superintendent Layton Wall told school trustees Tuesday he’s proud his schools led the county in ISTEP scores, graduation rates and improvements this year.
While 2010 graduation figures are pending as a few students complete requirements, if all do the work as expected, WRV will have a 100 percent graduation rate this year, Wall said. That’s up from an already strong 96.5 percent in 2009. …<more>

SWITZ CITY — Pondering the prospect of their commencement speeches, White River Valley High School’s 2010 valedictorian Miranda Dupire and salutatorian Grace Hayes couldn’t resist a joke.
Poring over a large dictionary in the library for photos, the pair posed, chins on fists, appearing deep in thought, imitating Rodin’s famous statute “The Thinker.” But they paused only for a moment, before breaking out in laughs.
For Dupire and Hayes, both 18, Saturday’s 10 a.m. ceremony marks the end of high school, but the beginning of bright futures for the talented duo.
“Miranda is a strong academic student and she’ll be successful at whatever she chooses,” WRV guidance counselor Mary Jo Jackson said. “Grace is just a well-rounded young lady. She’s got strong character, she’s strong academically, she volunteers, she works, and honestly, I don’t know how she does it all. They both will be very successful, both excellent young ladies and both will be very involved.”
The whirlwind rush toward the end of classes, and the necessity of focusing upon those speeches, showed the differences between the two young women.
With just over two weeks to go before the ceremony, Hayes and Dupire were both readying their commencement speeches.
Dupire, a frequent contributor to WRV fan pages, nearly had hers completed, while Hayes, who has starred in several school plays, expected she’d continue to revise her speech until the deadline. …<more>
