Eastern Greene Scrabblers will play their hearts out at nationals later this week.Four teams of seventh and eighth graders will head to Orlando, Fla., to participate in the National School SCRABBLE Championship.

“We fly out on April 8 and compete on April 9 and 10,” explained Dinah Fuller, EG Scrabble coach. “The kids have worked hard to raise the funds necessary and we plan to take in the sights and sounds of Florida while there.”

EG Scrabblers have also been hitting practice hard.

“We’ve been having practice twice a week,” Fuller explained.

Students have amped it up by playing with electronic timers and practicing on bingos.

“I’ve been having them work with the partner they’re going to be with. It’s a trust issue as well as a way to build up that confidence,” she added.

During the competition, students have 22 minutes of play.

“The kids are all very savvy, but they don’t have the exposure of competing with adults. … They play this as a fun thing we’re doing,” Fuller explained. “Our focus is just to get in there and play the best we can and work together.”

It’s also about the experience as a whole.

“We’re all about the journey. The journey is as important or more important as the actual win, but we want to do as well as we possibly can and come back and make Greene County proud,” Fuller added.

The students are also ready to take in Florida.

“This will be the first (trip to Orlando) for some of them,” she said.

The group will take an airboat ride, visit a Titanic replica, kayak and check out gardens, but there’s also a surprise in store.

“They know that Saturday after dinner we are going to a surprise. They do know that and it’s driving them crazy,” she said, adding the group will stay at the Loews Royal Pacific Resort on the beach.

And they’re as ready as they can be.

“Right now we think we’re on top of it, but we will learn something from that first game that we will need for the second game,” she said.

Fuller also has faith in her students.

“I know my kids will play with integrity,” she added.

Trevor McConnell has been appointed to serve as the new Athletic Director at Eastern-Greene High School.

During the Eastern-Greene School Board’s regular monthly meeting at the high school on Monday evening, the board voted unanimously, 5-0, in favor of hiring McConnell to fill the vacant position at the high school. Sandy Yoho will continue to serve as the Athletic Director of the middle school level.

McConnell has been serving as a special education teaching assistant and as the school’s varsity baseball coach. Under his leadership, the baseball team won it’s second straight baseball sectional title this year.

McConnell will now transition out of his job as a teaching assistant to assume the AD duties.

Superintendent Ty Mungle said for the 2009-2010 year, McConnell will receive a $30,000 salary which includes a $5,000 summer stipend for McConnell’s work with various summer camp programs, tournaments and field maintenance.

Mungle said McConnell is very well qualified for the job.

“Trevor attended Indiana University and got his degree in sports management and sports marketing plus he has a minor in business. Trevor has been a very popular coach at Eastern-Greene. He also played baseball when he was in college at IU. Currently he’s working on his masters degree,” said Mungle.

Board members Rob Hudson and Jackie Whaley were not present at the meeting.

Eastern Greene's Jordan Childress pitched a complete-game 3-2 victory over North Knox at the Linton-Stockton baseball sectional Saturday.

Eastern Greene's Jordan Childress pitched a complete-game 3-2 victory over North Knox at the Linton-Stockton baseball sectional Saturday.

Eastern Greene scored all of its runs in the fifth inning as the Thunderbirds held on for a 3-2 victory over North Knox in the semifinals of the Class 2A baseball sectional at Linton-Stockton’s Roy Herndon Field Saturday afternoon.

The victory was just the seventh for the Thunderbirds (7-17), who defeated the Warriors 8-5 during the regular season at Bicknell.

Last-minute starter Jordan Childress, pitching in place of Cody Sparks (sore arm), tossed a shutout for the first six innings. He gave up two hits, and two runs in the seventh before the T-Bird defense picked off a Warrior runner and then Childress retired Ryan Bolenbaugh with a fly ball to preserve the win.

“Jordan is a great kid that works so hard,” said EGHS coach Trevor McConnell. “He did not know until about two minutes before the game that he was going to pitch.

“He really did a good job of battling and our defense made some great plays behind him.”

In the Thunderbird fifth, Logan Hash doubled to the gap in left center field with one out. After Eric McArtor was intentionally walked to set up a potential double play, Sparks and Jake Hash each had RBI singles. In between, the Warriors had a throwing error, which allowed the second run to score.

Logan Hash, McArtor and Sparks each scored once.

The Thunderbirds will now play Linton-Stockton at 7 p.m. Monday in the championship game. The Miners beat Bloomfield 13-10 in 10 innings in the first semifinal Saturday.

The winner will advance to the Class 2A Austin Regional Saturday, June 6.

Linton-Stockton pitcher Ty Scott allowed just one run over five innings to pick up a 8-1 victory over Eastern Greene at Roy Herndon Field Thursday night.

Linton-Stockton pitcher Ty Scott allowed just one run over five innings to pick up a 8-1 victory over Eastern Greene at Roy Herndon Field Thursday night.

Ty Scott and Ty Trent combined to scatter seven hits and allow just one earned run as the Linton-Stockton Miners defeated the Eastern Greene Thunderbirds 8-1 in a Southwestern Indiana Athletic Conference high school baseball game at Roy Herndon Field Thursday.

With the victory, the Miners improved to 6-7, 1-3 in the SWIAC. Eastern Greene dropped to 4-9, 1-1 in the conference.

“That was the most complete game we have played yet,” said Linton-Stockton coach Bart Berns. “And a big part of that was the pitching of Ty Scott.”

Eastern Greene sophomore Davis Russell (left) receives congratulations from Eric McArtor after hitting a home run against Linton-Stockton Thursday night.

The sophomore right-hander gave up five hits over five innings to earn the victory. Scott fanned six and walked three.

He allowed a solo home run in the fifth to EGHS sophomore Davis Russell.

Trent allowed two hits in two scoreless innings of relief. He was credited with one walk and one strikeout.

“Ty Scott pitched a heck of a game,” said Berns. “He did a nice job of mixing up his pitches and keeping them off balance.

“Trent also came in and did a good job of finishing things up. I was pretty happy with our pitching and our overall play. We made some nice plays in the field behind them. This was a win where everybody did somthing positive.”

Eastern Greene coach Trevor McConnell said his team has not been focused mentally lately. He had the Thunderbirds running laps in the outfield after their second straight listless loss.

“If we didn’t have any talent and we were getting beat I could accept that,” said the first-year coach. “But right now is it very frustrating to watch us come out and fail to execute.

“We did a horrible job of running the bases. I think we had three or four runners either caught stealing or picked off. We had kids missing signals and who aren’t paying attention. I still believe we can turn it around, but the kids have to start playing better to be able to compete in the conference and sectional, which I still believe they can do.”

The Miners scored three runs in the fourth without hitting a ball out of the infield. Keith Cunningham, who was 2-for-3 with his first career home run, walked then Brad Thomas reached on a infield single. Trent then was credited with a fielder’s choice to load the bases. Eastern Greene second baseman Sawyer Miller threw home, but Cunningham scored the first of his two runs.

Thomas, who finished 1-for-2 with a sacrifice, scored on a passed ball and Trent came home when designated hitter Tanner Butler grounded out to first base, earning an RBI.

“We were able to play small ball in the third,” said Berns. “That is something we have not been able to do a lot of until tonight.

“We beat a good team tonight. They are well coached and have a lot of good players. I think they will get things turned over the last couple of weeks before the tournament.”

The Miners tacked on four more in the fifth off of starting and losing pitcher Jake Hash.

Cunningham singled and went to third on a sacrifice bunt by Thomas. Trent then delivered an RBI single.

Butler, who was 1-for-3, singled but was thrown out when Levi Baysinger (1-for-3 with a double) reached on a fielder’s choice.

Adam Neff then picked up two RBIs with a hit to left field. Evan Magni, who was 2-for-4, then knocked in a run with a single to right as the Miners led 7-1.

Cunningham hit a home run over the left field fence to lead off the sixth.

“The last time I hit one was in Major League. Does that count,” Cunningham said when talking with Berns about it being his first career dinger.

Russell’s solo shot came in the Eastern Greene fifth, accounting for their lone tally. He also had a singled in the seventh.

Miller and Gary Divine both also had two hits and Cody Sparks added a single.

The Miners will play a TRC game at Shakamak at 11 a.m. Saturday. Eastern Greene will play at historic Bosse Field at 4:30 p.m. Saturday against Evansville Mater Dei.

Eastern Greene built up an 8-0 lead and held on for a 11-8 victory over host White River Valley in a Southwestern Indiana Athletic Conference game at Switz City Monday night.

White River Valley scored four runs in the fifth and four more in the sixth to make the game interesting.

“When you have lost four in a row, a win is a win,” said Eastern Greene baseball coach Trevor McConnell. “We had some mental lapses and got complacent with the big lead in the fifth and sixth.

“But you have to give them credit. They put the ball in play when they had runners in scoring position. I have to give a lot of credit to Cody (Sparks). We did not want to go to our bullpen tonight with the way our schedule is the rest of the week. He really gutted it out and came back and shut them down in the seventh.”

For Eastern Greene, who improved to 4-7 with its first game in the SWIAC this season, got a home run and a single and three RBIs from Sawyer Miller.

Eric McArtor had three singles and Jake Hash was 2-for-4 with an RBI and three runs scored.

Sparks, Michael Love, Jordan Childress, Gary Devine and Davis Russell also had hits for the winners.

Jared Sargent and Levi Hostetter each had a single and double for the Wolverines.

Evan Karr, Clay Rollins, Nate Bushy, Ethan Dyer and Tyler Resler also had hits for the Wolverines. Briar Sparks was the starting and losing pitcher.

Shakamak long jumper James Marlow is airborne during an attempt at the Greene County track and field meet Monday at Linton-Stockton High School. Marlow won the event with a leap of 19 feet, five inches.

Trailing by one point heading into the final event of the night, the Eastern Greene boys 1,600 relay team crossed the finish line first to pull out a 133-132 win over Shakamak in Greene County Track and Field meet Monday night at Roy Williams Field.

Shakamak also runner-up in the girls meet, as the Lady Miners captured the meet with a total of 145 compared to 132 for the Lady Lakers.

The Miners were third in the boys meet with 120 followed by Bloomfield with 75 and White River Valley registered 28.

Bloomfield was third in the girls meet with 83 while White River Valley tallied 78 for fourth and the Lady Thunderbirds scored 45.

Eastern Greene boys coach Bill Valentine was ecstatic after the final team score was announced.

“This was a very exciting win for the boys tonight,” Valentine said. “We knew coming in that we had a chance to win along with Linton and Shakamak. Looking at the seeds we knew it was going to be a dead heat, but we had a similar meet with North Knox last week.”

White River Valley's Caitlyn Robertson clears one of the early heights during the long jump competition at the county track and field high school meet at Linton's Roy Williams Field Monday.

Valentine said the 1,600 relay team didn’t feel any extra pressure on them.

“They were pumped about the situation,” he said. “Everyone was positive, they knew what was at stake and just went after it.”

Shakamak’s Drew Gambill did all he could to help the Lakers overcome the Thunderbirds as he was the high point man of the meet. Gambill took home blue ribbons in each of the 1,600, 3,200, 400 and 800. It was the first time the junior competed in all four events in the same meet.

“I do not plan on ever doing that again,” Gambill chuckled about loading up on the four events. “I knew I had a good chance to win all four, but with the 400 and the 800 coming back-to-back I knew it was going to be tough.”

He added he wanted to break the school record in the 400, but came up just short. Gambill blew away the competition in the 400, his third event of the night, as he crossed the finish line in 50.9 seconds. His time just missed the Lakers school record, but was seven seconds better than the second-place finisher.

In the 1,600 and 3,200, he paced himself to conserve energy for the final two events.

“This was just a perfect night to race,” Gambill said. “It was probably the best night of the year by far.”

Gambill said he would mainly focus on just his time in the 800 the remainder of the season, the event he qualified for the state meet last season.

Eastern Greene’s Matthew Ogle was also a multiple winner on the night, as he cleared 10 feet, six inches to win the pole vault and 5-7 to win the high jump.

Stefan Sparks was another two event winner, as he outdistanced the field in the shot put (46-1) and discus (136-0).

“Stefan had an outstanding night,” Miners head coach Aaron Lynn said. “He had two person bests in his throws tonight.”

Evan Magni also had a strong night for the Miners as he took home a blue ribbon in the 200 and was runner-up in the 100 and long jump. John Stevenson defeated Magni in the 100 with a photo finish. Track officials had to review tape to determine the winner of the race.

In the girls meet, Julie Riggins took home the top point total of the meet with two firsts and a third-place finish. She tallied 27 of the Lady Cards points for the meet.

The freshman was first in the 1,600 (5:51.59) and 3,200 (12:46.18) and was third in the high jump (4-6).

“Julie is just an outstanding runner,” Bloomfield girls coach Tom Wappes said. “Her performance shows her dedication. She made a comment earlier in the season that she is addicted to running and it shows.

“She was a little disappointed in her third-place finish in the high jump but that is just how competitive she is.”

Bradlea Beard and Kelsey Andis helped lead the Lady Miners to the team title with a pair of blue ribbons each.

Beard took home top honors in the pole vault (7-0) and 800 (2:43.96). Andis was the top hurdler of the night with a winning time of 50.14 in the 300 and 17.02 in the 100.

Andis edged Shakamak’s Holli Moore in both events by a half second.

Tricia Emmons was the only other individual winner for the Lady Miners was she cleared 4-10 to win the high jump.

Lady Miners head coach Britney Lynn said the meet was tough.

“I thought Shakamak had a strong team tonight, and this was just a good win for us,” Lynn said. “We placed up in several events tonight and had a lot of personal bests.

“It was a good night to run and the girls all have positive attitudes and want to do their best. They make it fun to coach and is very rewarding.

Kristen Riggleman had a personal best in the shot put for the Miners with a heave of 30-4, good for third place.

White River Valley’s Kelsey Anderson and Samantha Goodman took home the top two places in the shot put, with 31-4 and 31-3 1/2 efforts respectively. While the pair flip-flopped spots in the discus. Anderson won with a throw of 109-2, which broke her own meet record and Anderson tossed the discus 103-8.

The Shakamak 1,600 relay team of Jade Gambill, Taylor Myers, Riley Montgomery and Holli Moore also had a record breaking night as they top the meet record with a time of 4:26.23. Linton-Stockton held the record since 2000 at 4:27.03.

Shakamak and Linton-Stockton will both be back in action Friday night at Roy Williams Field for the Tri-River Conference meet.

North Central pushed across one run in the bottom of the seventh inning to come away with a 6-5 win over Eastern Greene in a non-conference baseball game Wednesday evening.

Storm Lindsay, who homered in the third, started the rally with a two-out walk, then stole second base. Jordan Bean followed with a single past a diving Michael Love down the line at third to plate Lindsay.

“We continue to give up the big inning,” said Eastern Greene coach Trevor McConnell. “We gave up four unearned runs in the third after two outs.

“Until we elminate the one inning where we give away runs, it is going to be hard for us to beat teams. The story in all of our losses has been the one big inning, where we make mental and physical errors.”

Jake Hash went the distance for Eastern Greene on the bump. He fanned four batters and issued one walk in his complete game effort. Only two of the six runs he gave up were earned and he scattered eight hits.

Love and Eric McArtor paced the 13-hit attack for Eastern Greene (3-7) with a pair of hits. McArtor registered a two-bagger as did Gary Devine, who was 2-for-4.

Davis Russell also had two hits and Sawyer Miller also had two hits.

“We are a pretty talented team,” said McConnell. “There is no reason that we can’t win games.

“But until we played all 21 outs and stay focused, we can’t beat anybody. The talent is there, but we have to learn to put a complete game together.”

Eastern Greene will be back in action Saturday when they travel to Paoli at 11 a.m.
