White River Valley continues to show improvement as the Wolverine baseball team defeated host Cloverdale 7-2 in a high school game Thursday night.”We are starting to play better,” said WRV coach Mike Karr. “This is the third game in a row where we have been really competitive. It is always good to win, but we were competitive and got the win as well.

“We are hoping to continue to improve as we finish out a busy month of May. We want to be competitive in the tournament, that is our goal.”

Jeremy Roberts pitched five innings to earn his second victory in five decisions. Nathan Bushy tossed two shutout innings to close out the win.

“Jeremy had five strikeouts and two walks,” said Karr. “He pitched a really good game.

“Nate also threw well in his two innings of work. He struck out three and gave one hit.”

First baseman Ethan Dyer recorded two outs on high pop ups, according to Karr.

White River Valley No. 1 singles player Kendra Brown attempts to return a shot in the first set of her match here Thursday night. Brown dropped the match in straight sets, 4-6, 1-6.

The youthful White River Valley girls tennis team dropped their second match in as many decisions on the season as the visiting Patriots of Vincennes Rivet blanked the Lady Wolverines 5-0 here Wednesday.

“We are just a young team,” WRV coach Katie Mullis said. “But we will get better. I just tell them to keep pushing themselves and give 110 percent.”

At No. 1 singles, Kendra Brown played one of the most competitive matches of the evening. The senior dropped the first set 4-6 before tiring and falling 1-6 in the second set to Carly Carlisle.

Mindie Neeley was defeated on the No. 2 singles court, 1-6, 1-6 and Brooke Braswell dropped a 0-6, 2-6 decision at No. 3 singles.

“The scores at singles do not show it, but the girls played really good,” Mullis said. “They had some really long volleys and a lot of the points came on whoever hit the ball in the net first.”

Amanda Mowery and Stephanie Decker lost 1-6, 1-6 at No. 1 doubles while Megan Padgett and Danielle Higgins fell 2-6, 1-6 as the No. 2 doubles tandem.

Mullis said she could see some improvement from their first match against Barr-Reeve.

“The girls were not as nervous tonight as what they were the first match,” the second-year coach said. “They did improve but it’s still a confidence issue with them. If they think they are not going to win a match or score a point then they won’t. They have to remain positive and have the mindset that they can do it.”

After only playing two matches because of inclement weather through the first month of the season, WRV will have three matches next week. They will alternate away and home matches against Bloomfield on Tuesday and Wednesday, before hosting Linton-Stockton on Thursday.
