Union (Dugger) sophomore Shayna Nicol winds up to fire a pitch to the plate here Thursday against North Central.

Union (Dugger) sophomore Shayna Nicol winds up to fire a pitch to the plate here Thursday against North Central.

Visiting North Central pounded out 18 hits Thursday evening to cruise to a Tri-River Conference win over Union (Dugger), 22-0 in high school softball action.

The Lady Bulldogs failed to put pressure on the Ladybirds early in the game as they left the bases loaded in the home half of the first inning, trailing just 1-0. Megan Gambill led off the bottom of the first with a seeing eye single on the first pitch, stole second and advanced to third on a one-out bloop single by Shayna Nicol. After a walk to Cassie Parr loaded the bases, Adara Crooks and the Ladybirds got out of the jam with a punchout, then forced Michaela Shelton to ground out sharply to short stop to end the threat.

The Thunderbirds would then erupt for five runs in the second, seven more in the third, five in the fourth and four in the fifth for the final tally, ending the game after five innings via the 10-run rule.

“They are a good team and a very good hitting team,” Lady Bulldogs head coach Rick Swan said. “It’s disappointing to have a game like this after playing two good games last week — North Knox and North Daviess. I think the girls were a little intimidated coming into the game.”

The Bulldogs fall to 1-11 overall and 0-3 in the TRC while North Central improved to 9-1 and remained perfect in conference action.

Nicol recorded half of the Bulldog hits with a pair of singles in the game. She also made her first appearance inside the circle as she pitched the final two innings in relief of Gambill.

“Shayna had a good game,” Swan said. “She had a good day at the plate and also pitched well for her first time.”

Catherine Murray registered the fourth hit for the Bulldogs with a single.

Former Bulldog player, Ashli Scott finished the game 1-for-3 at the plate before being removed in the fourth inning. She had a two-run single and scored a run in the third inning.

Megan Stone led the offense for the LadyBirds with four hits in five appearances at the dish. She scored four runs, drove in six runs with a pair of doubles and an inside-the-park homer.

Kayla Irwin finished 2-for-2 at the plate including a three-run blast and also scored four times.

Crooks went the distance for the win and fanned nine batters.

Swan said its more of a confidence factor for his inexperience squad.

“We obviously have a lot of things to work on,” Swan said. “But our main thing is we need to keep our heads up in the games. We have a bad inning or bad play and you see the girls heads start to drop. We have to correct that.”

Union (Dugger) will look to improve on their win total when they play host to Martinsville, Ill. Saturday in a double header starting at 11 a.m.

Dustin Howard and Logan Chesterfield teamed up to throw a five-hitter to lead the Union (Dugger) High School baseball team to a 4-1 victory over Loogootee Saturday.

“This was a really good win,” said Union (Dugger) coach Clarence Johnson, whose Bulldogs evened their record at 3-3. “Loogootee is a well coached team that brought in a 10-4 record, with their four losses coming on late-inning home runs.

“I was really happy with the way the kids played. This was a complete-game for us. I was really happy with the way we played defensively.”

Howard tossed the first five innings to earn his victory. He struck out two and walked two, allowing four hits and one unearned run.

Chesterfield yielded one hit and no runs in two innings of relief, earning the save. He fanned three and walked one.

“Dustin pitched a fine game,” said Johnson. “He had control of his pitches and kept their batters off balance. He did not have a runner in scoring position until the fifth, when an error, two fielder’s choices and a hit led to their only run.

“Logan came in and I believe got the save in relief. He did a fantastic job.”

B.J. Howard was 3-for-4 with a double and home run, one RBI and three runs scored.

Blane Boyd was credited with two RBIs and Dustin Howard helped his own cause with two hits in three at bats, both doubles, and one RBI.

White River Valley's Trey Sparks dives head first into first base, as Union (Dugger) first baseman Tanner Reynolds awaits the throw.

Union (Dugger) senior Logan Chesterfield fanned 13 White River Valley batters in his seven innings of work, as the Bulldogs came away with a 10-3 Southwestern Indiana Athletic Conference win in high school baseball action here Wednesday.

“My arm felt good today,” the senior hurler said. “The wind was blowing in my favor and that really helped with the movement in my pitches as well. This was a good win and will hopefully give us a confidence boost.”

Chesterfield proved that he do more than just pitch, as he drove in four runs at the plate with a 3-for-4 effort offensively to power the Bulldogs’ nine-hit attack.

“We do not have the luxury of having someone designate hit for our pitchers like some other clubs do so it was great to have Logan strikeout 13 batters and also get three hits at the plate tonight,” Union (Dugger) coach Clarence Johnson said.

Chesterfield recorded two punchouts in every inning with the exception of the third. He scattered five hits, walked one and hit a batter and all three runs he allowed were unearned.

After battery mate, B.J. Howard led off the home half of the first inning off with a bloop double down the right field line, Chesterfield plated Howard with a single. Two straight errors by the Wolverines defense would allow the Bulldogs (2-1, 1-1 SWIAC) to strike for two more runs, as they led 3-0 after one inning of play.

“The first inning it looked like we hadn’t been on the field in a while,” WRV head coach Mike Karr said. “We were just a little too indecisive on plays.”

The Wolverines (1-3, 0-2 SWIAC) actually have not been able to practice on their own field since March 28, as they have made renovations to their field.

Wolverine starting pitcher, Jeremy Roberts settled into a groove after the first inning, as he pitched four consecutive scoreless frames.

After a Bulldog error in the top of the sixth with two outs ended the shutout for Chesterfield, Levi Hostetter hit a fly ball into a swirling wind in right field, which landed for a two-run double to knot the contest at three apiece.

Dustin Howard led off the home half of the sixth inning off with a single to right field. Gerran Wilkes followed with a ringing double off the right center field fence to set runners up at second and third with no one out. After an intentional walk loaded the bases, then a pop-out, Wesley Marshall registered a two-run bloop single to give the Bulldogs a 5-3 advantage. Three batters later, Chesterfield smacked a bases clearing double to all but put the game away.

The Wolverines went 1-2-3, with two Chesterfield punchouts to end the game in the seventh inning.

“I was very pleased with the way the kids responded there in the sixth inning after giving up the lead in the top half,” Johnson said. “We set the tone with being aggressive at the plate early in the game, then kind of hit a wall in the middle innings, but they stuck with it.”

Karr lauded the performance of Chesterfield and the Bulldogs.

“He (Chesterfield) was in complete control of his pitches tonight,” the second year head coach said. “He had good command, but I was disappointed in the way we let some good pitches go by.

“Right now they are a better team than we are. But I wouldn’t trade my group of kids for anything. Our goal is get ready to be playing our best ball by the sectional. We just need to get on the field and practice.”

Roberts, was the pitcher of record for the Wolverines. He was responsible for all 10 Bulldog runs, only five earned runs. The senior walked three batters and also fanned three hitters. Nate Bushy relieved Roberts in the sixth inning and recorded the final two outs.

Trey Sparks finished with two hits to pace the Wolverines offense.

Wilkes had added a two-run single to go along with his two-bagger, while Jacob Todd added a single in the win for the Bulldogs.

Union (Dugger) will travel to North Knox for a non-conference tilt Friday, while the Wolverines will travel to Mitchell the same night.
