The Shakamak softball team bounced back two nights after suffering a double conference loss at the hands of Linton-Stockton with an impressive five-inning 12-1 win on the road against Owen Valley Thursday night.Casey Fougerousse recorded a double and triple as she drove in three runs to pace an 11-hit attack by the Lady Lakers (6-8).

Brandi Ashcraft, Kristi Pearson, Jessi Gilbert and Lacey Ashcraft all registered two-baggers. Pearson and Gilbert both also drove in a pair of runs and Gilbert also added a single.

Sydney Weinzapfel recorded a pair of singles and Jazmine Martin and Mikayla Crane rounded out the offense with a single each. Crane also drove in a run.

“We had a lot more life in our bats tonight than what we did against Linton,” Lakers head coach Paige Wolf said. “It took us a while to get going but once we did, we scored 12 runs in three innings.”

Crane was the starting and winning pitcher for the Lakers, as she evened her record at 6-6 on the season. The freshman fanned five batters, gave up four hits and walked a pair in her five innings of work.

“It was good to see Mikayla bounce back the way she did tonight,” Wolf said. “She was struggling at times to find the strike zone the other night, and it just shows the amount of poise that she has to pitch like she did tonight.”

Shakamak will return to the diamond Friday when they play host to South Vermillion in a varsity doubleheader starting at 5:30 p.m.

Tyler Richardson fanned 15 batters and tossed a three-hitter to pace the Shakamak High School baseball team to a 5-1 victory over visiting Clay City Monday night.

Richardson issued four free passes. He allowed one unearned run, evening his record at 1-1.

“I thought it was a great pitching performance by Tyler,” said Shakamak coach Matt Fougerousse. “He threw really well tonight.

“He really hit his spots. He was able to get his curve ball over for strikes and it was an out pitch for him as well. Ironically the only run we gave up was after a one-out error by Tyler. Our defense played well.”

The Lakers, who are now 7-5 overall, 3-0 in the Southwestern Indiana Athletic Conference and Tri-River Conference, only managed four hits off of losing pitcher Ryne Hayes.

Tyler Grissom was 1-for-2 with a double and one RBI. Tyler Sparks had a base hit and drove in one run.

Cade Sapp went 1-for-3 and John Smith was 1-for-4. Smith scored one run, as did Billy Newton and Scott McNabb.

“I hate to sound like a broken record, but Clay City is another sectional opponent that is getting better every day,” said Fougerousse. “Clay City is improving and North Central is getting better every game out. Union (Dugger) beat a pretty good Loogootee team over the weekend. I heard that WRV played Eastern close tonight.

“I think it is going to be a very competitive sectional. It is going to be fun.”

Shakamak will host Bloomington North at 6 p.m. Tuesday, play at Loogootee Friday and host Linton-Stockton Saturday.

T.J Hill fanned a season-high 15 batters as the Shakamak Lakers defeated Union (Dugger), 3-2 Monday evening in a Southwestern Indiana Athletic Conference and Tri-River Conference baseball game.”Hill pitched a great game for them tonight,” Union (Dugger) head coach Clarence Johnson said of the Lakers hurler. “He kept us off balance all night, was in command of his pitches and kept our bats at bay.”

Hill gave up just two hits and issued two free passes.

Blane Boyd and Dustin Howard registered the only hits off of Hill, both singles. Boyd was credited with two RBIs for the game as well.

Billy Newton did not register any hits, but drove in a pair of runs with two sacrifice flies.

Tyler Richardson added an RBI single in the third inning to account for the third and final Lakers run of the game.

John Smith added a single and scored two runs, while Scott McNabb had a pair of singles in the win. Tyler Grissom (double) and Tyler Sparks (single) rounded out the six-hit attack for the Lakers offense.

Lakers head coach Matt Fougerousse said their second straight nail-biter will only pay off in the end.

“We haven’t really dominated anyone this year nor have we really been dominated by anyone else,” he said. “These close games will only make your team better and more mentally tough.”

Johnson said he was happy with the way his squad battled the Lakers.

“We made a couple mistakes, but other than that I was really pleased with the way the kids played tonight,” he said. “This game can only serve as a positive for us in the long haul.”

The Lakers will be back in action Tuesday when they travel to Eastern Greene for another SWIAC game, while the Bulldogs return to diamond when they travel to Sullivan on Thursday.

Shakamak scored eleven runs in the top of the seventh inning as they disposed of Eastern Greene, 17-0, Monday night in a Southwestern Indiana Athletic Conference softball game. With the win Shakamak improves to 5-7 overall and evens their conference mark at 1-1. Eastern Greene remains winless on the season.

Eight different Lady Lakers produced at least one hit as they pounded out 20 hits for the game.

Kristi Pearson, Jess Gilbert and Sydney Weinzapfel each registered four hits in the lopsided affair for the Lakers.

Casey Fougerousse added an inside-the-park home run and drove in three runs for the Lakers.

“It took awhile for the offense to get going but everyone hit the ball really well tonight,” Lakers head coach Paige Wolf said. “Everyone up and down the lineup contributed tonight for us.”

Mikayla Crane picked up her fifth win of the season inside the circle for the Lakers. The freshman fanned nine batters in her seven innings of work while giving up two hits and walked one batter.

Whitney Richardson and Nikki Butler each had a hit for the Lady Thunderbirds.

Madison McCabe was the starting and losing pitcher for Eastern Greene. The sophomore recorded five punchouts and walked two batters in going the distance.

Eastern Greene coach Gina Ingram said they committed 14 errors, 10 in two of the final three innings.

“We were down just 3-0 after the fourth inning,” said Ingram. “But we just made way too many errors late in the game, which allowed Shakamak to break the game open.

“Even after the fifth, we are still down just 6-0. You can almost live with that. A lot of the errors are on routine plays.”

Ingram, whose Lady Thunderbirds dropped to 0-5, 0-1, said it was a positive to play seven innings for the first time this year.

Shakamak will travel to Union (Dugger) for a SWIAC game Tuesday, while the T-Birds will host Bloomfield on Thursday.

Shakamak freshman ace Mikayla Crane fanned a career-high eight batters as the Lady Lakers defeated Sullivan 3-0 in a non-conference softball game Thursday night on the road.”Mikayla pitched a good game tonight,” Shakamak head coach Paige Wolf said. “She had a lot of strikeouts tonight and worked her way out of a couple bases-loaded jams.”

In addition to her career-high punchouts, Crane issued four free passes and scattered five hits in her seven innings of work. Crane notched her fourth win in nine decisions.

Casey Fougerousse and Brandi Ashcraft paced a nine-hit offensive attack for Shakamak ( 4-7) with a pair of singles each. Fougerousse also stole two bases and scored two runs.

Jess Gilbert and Keshia Deschamp each registered doubles, while Lacey Ashcraft, Jazmine Martin and Kristi Pearson all added singles in the win. Pearson was credited with the only run batted in for the game.

Wolf said she was pleased with the amount of hits, but said they squandered numerous scoring opportunities.

“We had some good hits tonight, but left several runners on base,” she said. “We just got a little too impatient at the plate at times.

“We didn’t play our best but it was good enough to come away with the win.”

The Lady Lakers game with Hutsonville, Ill scheduled for Friday night was postponed and will not be made up. Shakamak will be back in action Monday when they travel to Southwestern Indiana Athletic Conference foe Eastern Greene.
