Cards beat Rivet for second time

For the second time this season, the Bloomfield High School boys golf team defeated Vincennes Rivet. The Cardinals, who were short three players because of a FFA banquet, shot 187. The host Patriots, playing at the Vincennes Elks Club, finished with a 219.

Andrew Bladen paced the Cards (8-5) with a nine-hole total of 42, easily earning low-medalist honors.

Derek Corn carded a 44, Chad Mead 48 and Bradley Seymour shot a 53.

“Any time you can get a win it is a wonderful thing,” said Bloomfield coach Monte McIntosh. “Considering all the rain, the course was in excellent condition, which is not what I was expecting when we came here.

“Bradley really need a round like this for his confidence. I think this was probably his lowest score of the year. We only had four boys tonight and they all stepped up. The score might have been a bit misleading. Rivet is very young and just struggled on their home course.”

The Cardinals will play Shakamak at 4:30 p.m. Monday at Phil Harris. They will play on the same course Saturday, May 16 in the Southwestern Indiana Athletic Conference championship.

Reid Jackson and Tyler Monroe each shot 42 to pace the Sullivan High School boys golf team to a 171-202 victory over Bloomfield in a match at the Sullivan Elks Club Monday.

Andrew Bladen was low for the Cardinals with a 44. Derek Corn had a 49, Chad Mead carded a 50, Justin Bennett 59, Bradley Seymour 61 and Kyle Hall 64.

“We couldn’t keep it in-bounds,” said Bloomfield coach Monte McIntosh. “On a narrow course like this, you have to play it safe or the course will beat you.

“We just did not play as well or as smart as we have been playing lately.”

Lady Cardinals now 9-1

Bloomfield kept its winning streak alive by beating Vincennes Rivet 4-1 on the Cardinals home courts Monday.

Bloomfield jumped to a 2-1 lead after singles play but then things started to look bleak with both doubles teams in trouble.

Both doubles teams turned things around to assure a Bloomfield win.

At No. 1 singles, Bailey Maryfield struggled early but came back to take Carly Carlisle 7-5, 6-4. This was her 10th straight win this season and 30 victory in her last 32 matches.

The only Cardinal that didn’t have a difficult time was No. 2 singles Sarah Miller, who disposed of Meredith Goodwin 6-1, 6-1.

The only loss of the day came at the No. 3 singles spot where Emily Riggins was defeated by Alexi Pea 6-3, 6-3.

The No. 1 doubles team was in trouble early when Christina Neill and Rachel Toon found themselves in a 4-1 hole. At that point, they lifted their game and ran off five games in a row to take the first set. The momentum continued into the second set as they downed Emily Snider and Rachel Richardville 6-4, 6-3.

The No. 2 doubles team of Lindley Gremore and Meaghan Bucher was also in deep trouble early by losing the first seven games of the match. They calmly stayed with their game plan and gradually got back into the match. The Cardinal pair was down 5-4, love-30 in the second set with Bucher serving, two points away from losing the match.

Gremore and Bucher cooly took charge and finished off the set and then the match downing Taylor Ostendort and Maria Matick 0-6, 7-5, 6-3.

This was an important match for both doubles teams. Both teams moved much better and showed more confidence than they have in previous matches. The hard part now is to maintain that same kind of intensity in today’s match.

Bloomfield goes back on the road Wednesday taking on the Paoli Rams. This is a make-up of a rain canceled April 13th match.

Mustangs thump Cardinals

Coors Field, home of the major league baseball team Colorado Rockies, is known for being a friendly hitting park. Bloomfield’s home field is quickly becoming just as friendly, unfortunately the visiting team is taking advantage of the short porch.

For the second straight game, the Cardinals were embarrassed at home, this time to the tune of a 21-2 drumming by Edgewood, Saturday afternoon.

The Mustangs pounded out 23 hits, including five that left the yard, as the Cardinals saw their record fall to 7-7 on the season.

Cardinal ace Cody Pearson was hit the hardest, as he failed to make it through the second inning. The senior suffered his first loss of the season, as he gave up 13 runs on 12 hits and failed to strike out a batter for the first time this season.

Josh Collier did most of the damage as he belted a pair of two-run bombs off Pearson and also added an RBI double. Collier and several other Mustang starters were removed from the game after a 13-run second inning, which put Edgewood ahead 17-0.

Pearson, Bryce Helms, Payton Karl and Ben Montgomery registered the only four hits for the Cardinals. Pearson also drove in the only two runs, in the third inning.

One bad inning costs Cards

Bloomfield came up with only three hits and North Central scored all the runs they would need in the second inning as the visiting Thunderbirds defeated the Cardinals 9-5 in a high school baseball game Monday.

“Other than the second inning where we had a key error and they scored six runs, I thought we played a pretty good game defensively,” said Bloomfield coach Mark Bartlow. “We should have been out of that inning, but they capitalized on our mistake.

“Even though we jumped ahead 3-0 after our first at bat, you are not going to win many ball games with just three hits.”

North Central had nine hits, including a home run by winning pitcher Storm Lindsay.

Payton Karl had a home run and two RBIs for the Cardinals. Travis Bowlen doubled and scored one run.

Zack Mead had a base hit and two RBIs

Junior Bryce Helms scored two runs.

Freshman Zaq Query was the starting and losing pitcher. Cody Pearson and Karl both threw in relief.

“I thought Karl did a good job in relief, shutting them out in the sixth and seventh,” said Bartlow.

The Cardinals (7-8) will host Loogootee Wednesday before playing at Riverton Parke Saturday.

Cards beat Wolverines

Monday, April 29, 2009

Rain has been causing lots of problems for the spring sports this year but nothing stranger has happened than what occurred with the Bloomfield-White River Valley matches. The Bloomfield at WRV match was to be played April 20 but rain caused a cancellation of that match which was rescheduled for April 29.

This was the day after Bloomfield was to host White River Valley. Bloomfield was leading in that match when rain caused a suspension.

It was decided to finish the first match and play the second match Wednesday. Bloomfield prevailed 5-0 in both matches.

Bailey Maryfield improved her season record to 9-0 with a couple of wins over Kendra Brown at the No. 1 singles position; 6-0, 6-0 and 6-1, 6-1.

No. 2 singles Sarah Miller compiled two wins over Mindie Neeley; 6-1, 6-1 and 6-1, 6-0. The No. 3 singles position was shared between Emily Riggins in the first match defeating Jenny Nolting 6-1, 6-0 and Sarah Scott in the second match with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Nolting.

At No. 1 doubles Christina Neill and Rachel Toon defeated Amanda Mowery and Brooke Braswell twice, 6-4, 6-1 and 6-0, 6-3. No. 2 doubles team of Lindley Gremore and Meaghan Bucher finished the sweep by taking down Megan Padgett and Danielle Higgins 6-0, 6-0 and 6-1, 6-3.

The young Lady Wolverines had to juggle their line-up a bit from the match, with one regular out with an injury and another leaving the team.

“We had to make some adjustments somewhat tonight but the girls handled it well,” Lady Wolverines coach Katie Mullis said.

One player making the switch was Nolting, a jv player who played No. 3 singles.

With the loss the Wolverines are still in search of their first win under the guidance of Mullis, now in her second season.

“We will be OK,” Mullis said. “The girls are playing better as a team.”

The Wolverines will be back in action Thursday when they play host to Linton-Stockton, also winless on the season.

Bloomfield won the junior varsity match 4-1.

Bloomfield continues its home stand Thursday when they take on North Daviess in a 4:30 p.m. match.

Bloomfield pushed across two runs in the bottom of the seventh to come away with a 2-1 victory over visiting Sullivan Wednesday in a high school softball game.

“It was a good game,” said Bloomfield coach Jessica Lauderdale. “It was a little nerve-wracking, but the girls made the plays they needed to make in order to get the win.

“The girls came back after giving up the first run of the game in the sixth.”

Shelby Gott, who had two hits, singled to left field in the seventh to start the Lady Cardinal rally. She scored on a Sullivan miscue to tie the game at 1-all.

Elyse Weddle then singled and stole second base and scored from third on a sacrifice fly by Holly Zschiedrich.

Gott allowed just one run and three hits to earn the victory, her eighth in 11 decisions.
