WORTHINGTON — Saturday is yard sale day in Worthington.

For one day a year, this quiet, peaceful town becomes a mecca for shoppers hunting for trash and treasures at sales set up all over town.

Sponsored by the Worthington Lions Club, the date of the annual sale is easy to remember. It’s always on the calendar for the Saturday before Labor Day.

Started in 1992 by Jean Ingersoll and Lessalee Pickard, who have both passed away, it is one of the oldest, largest and most successful community yard sale events in the state.

The day starts early at 6 a.m. when the Lions Club starts serving breakfast in the Town Hall of the Municipal Building, located on State Road 67 downtown on the Triangle.

Lions Club President Glen Cundiff said they’ll be open until 10 a.m. and will charge $5 for adults or $2.50 for children. The menu includes pancakes and sausage, biscuits and gravy, milk, juice and coffee. …<more>

With thousands of people expected to be strolling and driving on the streets of Worthington for yard sale day, the Worthington Police Department is suggesting a few tips for an enjoyable and safe day for residents and shoppers.

Town Marshal Dennis Conaway said the streets are always congested on yard sale day and the most important thing to remember is to slow down and be respectful of others.

Besides calling 911 in case of emergency, Conaway said police officers and rescue personnel will be on duty.

“Officers or members of the fire department will be around the Muncipal Building where the fire and police stations are located alongside Town Hall,” said Conaway. “If any children get separated from parents, they could go, or be taken, there for help. Parents can also instruct children to go to the bank or any other business or the nearest yard sale activity to ask for help.” …<more>

‘Bob the Goat’ gets a reprieve from Worthington Town Council

WORTHINGTON — “Bob the Goat” can stay in the town Worthington.

That’s good news for the Raybern family that have come to love their pet goat over the last four years.

“Bob the Goat” has been in parades and visited the elementary school numerous times.

The goat’s owner, Bill Raybern, addressed the Worthington Town Council on Tuesday night and appealed for the town fathers to re-consider enacting a new animal ordinance that would have banned goats and animals like rabbits, chickens, as well as exotic animals like lions, tigers and bears from habitation within the town limits.

The town has had an ordinance on the books banning chickens, goats and cattle in town since 1994, but town council president Hal Harp said the law has not been strictly enforced.

Harp noted that the town council has been discussing the issue for several months.

Last month, the council gave a 30-day notice that a new ordinance was going to be passed.

“It’s not something that has just come up,” he said. “I do know that several residents no longer have the animals in question.” …<more>

Worthington resident Danny Lent says a continuing problem of standing, stagnant water in his neighborhood stinks and the mosquitos are growing bigger every day.

“Who else in this town is tired of the smell and the mosquitos from the water running everywhere?” Lent asked. “In the north end of town the water is still there and still smelling and it’s still full of mosquitos.”

Tuesday night, he called on members of the Worthington Town Council to help solve the problem.

Lent offered to share in the expense and asked the council to hire Kevin Provo to drain the water in some fashion either to an old nearby pond or into the sewer system.

This has been a continuing problem for a number of years, and it seems to have gotten worse since the town did some sewer work in 1998, according to council member Gregg Roudebush. …<more>

A new, shiny red, 3,000-gallon Firovac tanker with a vacuum tank has arrived at the station and the firefighters have spent extra hours training to use it.

But there’s more good news. The days of worrying about their safety when they strap on a SCBA (Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus) are over too.

Fourteen new SCBA packs have also arrived — made possible by a long-awaited FEMA grant. …<more>

Worthington water woes

by Greene County Daily World on Jul.21, 2010, under Worthington

Wednesday, July 21, 2010
Greene County Daily World

Residents of Worthington have been in no mood for water problems since the rivers flooded in 2008 but they’ve had plenty of water problems in the past week, only the river is not to blame.

Hal Harp, who serves as president of the Worthington Town Council, says a combination of factors is responsible for the flooding of yards and streets and for water in the basements of a large number of homes.

“These rains have just overpowered our systems,” said Harp. “The ditches going out of town were full and this water just had no place to go.” …<more>
