Police were involved in an hour-long slow speed pursuit of a stolen tractor Friday night that landed a Coalmont man in jail, and left a Sullivan patrol car in flames.

Brian Kit Boone, 52, was arrested at 11 p.m. on various charges after allegedly pilfering the farm tractor from Crawford County, Ill., and leading police on and off roads through western Sullivan County before crashing in a ditch on CR 300N, near private road 85E.

Crawford County Sheriff’s Department requested assistance around 9:50 p.m. from local agencies after spotting the tractor near Graysville.

Police followed Boone as he traveled eastbound on SR 154 and turned south on SR 63. When officers activated their emergency lights, the tractor turned east into a field.

Sullivan City Police Department Patrolman Jerrad Pirtle, who was called to assist in the incident, said he joined the chase early on.

He said Boone traveled through fields, ditches and a wooded path until he again reached SR 154.

“In a pursuit you have to worry about wrecking or people getting out of the way, but at 20 mph you don’t really have to worry about it,” the patrolman said.

Pirtle said Boone turned east into a field to avoid spike strips placed near the state road’s intersection with 700W. He traveled the county road until reaching 300N.

Boone took the county road east, again avoiding spike strips, until crashing near the private road.

Pirtle said Boone stopped twice at U.S. 41 to let traffic clear, and also stopped at Section Street.

“He had due regard for everybody else but he wouldn’t stop for us,” he said.

Toward the end of the chase, Pirtle said his patrol car got stuck. He then ran to where the tractor had crashed, but quickly ran back after learning his patrol car was on fire.

The cause of the fire is unclear — its catalytic converter may have set brush ablaze, Pirtle said — but the car is a total loss, the patrolman said.

Meanwhile, Boone remained jailed Sunday on preliminary felony charges of resisting law enforcement and possession of stolen property.

Misdemeanor charges include criminal mischief, criminal recklessness with a vehicle and reckless driving.

Boone was also wanted on an out-of-county warrant for failure to appear in court on an illegal firearm possession charge.

He remained jailed Sunday on $22,500 bond.

West’s alleged involvement in a large scale marijuana growing and sales operation is being probed as part of an ongoing investigation.

While first attempting to serve the outstanding arrest warrants Sunday morning on West in Coalmont, law enforcement officials from Clay County discovered a large marijuana growing operation, numerous weapons, drug paraphernalia and a large amount of cash.

Officials are investigating the cause of a trailer fire that displaced a family.Shortly before 3 a.m. on Sunday, members of the Lewis Volunteer Fire Department, with backup assistance from Jasonville and Wright Township volunteer fire departments, were dispatched to a trailer fire at 6870 W. Nesbit St., Coalmont.

“We were able to quickly contain the fire within the trailer itself,” Lewis Fire Chief Bryan Husband said Monday.

“Although we have a standing structure, it was a total loss.”

Husband said resident Crystal Curnett, her two children and another family member were not home during the fire and the American Red Cross has been contacted to help the family.
