State Police pause to honor fallen troopers

Bloomington — The Indiana State Police Post at Bloomington conducted their annual memorial service Thursday for those members of the department that gave their lives in the line of duty.

Troopers present were brought to attention and prepared for the roll call. Captain Danny Price and Lieutenant Paul Bucher then read each fallen member’s name, along with a description of the circumstances surrounding their death.

A total of 45 members of the Indiana State Police have died in the line of duty since the department’s inception in 1933.

Since the early days of the Indiana State Police, memorial services have been held each May at all Indiana State Police districts to perpetuate the memory of those who have died in the line of duty.

“The service serves as a means of paying tribute to those who died in the line of duty, that their sacrifice was not made in vain, and as a reminder to those of us left behind that we should strive to maintain the level of professional service to the public our departed comrades so unselfishly gave their lives for,” Sgt. Curt Durnil said in a prepared news release.

District DWI saturation patrols net 47 arrests; 103 traffic tickets

The Bloomington Post of the Indiana State Police conducted a district-wide DWI (driving while under the influence) saturation patrol on Thursday night and made 47 criminal arrests.

The Bloomington District covers Greene, Monroe, Lawrence, Owen, and Brown counties.

The patrol itself lasted eight hours. During that time period, Bloomington District troopers also wrote 103 traffic violations, 184 written warnings were issued.

Thirteen motorists were arrested for Operating While Intoxicated, along with 51 other alcohol-related arrests, according to ISP Public Information Officer Sgt. Curt Durnill.

“The Indiana State Police encourages all motorists to call 911 or the closest Indiana State Police Post when they observe another motorist that may be impaired. Be prepared to give a description of the vehicle, location and its direction of travel,” he said. “The Indiana State Police are committed to traffic safety and will continue to conduct saturation patrols and sobriety checkpoints to apprehend impaired drivers and to deter others from drinking and driving.”

The Bloomington Post of the Indiana State Police conducted a driving while intoxicated (DWI) saturation patrol district-wide on Friday night and cited numerous motorists for traffic and alcohol violations.

The Bloomington District covers Greene, Monroe, Lawrence, Owen, and Brown counties and the saturation patrol itself lasted eight hours, according to ISP Public Information Officer Sgt. Curt Durnil.

During that time period, Bloomington District troopers wrote 67 traffic violations, 200 written warnings were issued and nine criminal arrests were made - eight felonies and one misdemeanor.

Eleven motorists were arrested for DWI (10 misdemeanors and 1 felony) along with eight citations being written for seat belt violations. Two motorists were cited for driving while suspended.

Trooper Nash, other local IPS officers honored for work by Bloomington Post

The Indiana State Police at the Bloomington Post has recognized several local troopers for their service to the department. The awards were presented by Lieutenant Paul Bucher, Commander of the Bloomington Post.The 2008 Bloomington District “Trooper of the Year Award” for OWI arrests was awarded to Trooper Allen Deel , who serves Monroe County. Trooper Deel took 175 drunk drivers off of Indiana highways in 2008.

Trooper Eric Nash was awarded the 2008 Bloomington District “Trooper of the Year Award” for Traffic Enforcement. Trooper Nash serves Greene County.

Troopers Allen Deel was awarded the 2008 Bloomington District “Trooper of the Year Award” for Criminal Enforcement. Trooper Greg Day was also recognized for his work in Criminal Enforcement and felony arrests.

Troopers Ryan Miller, Doug Hutchinson and Sergeant Brad Ayers were recognized for their investigative assistance work on the Voland murder case that occurred in Brown County, November of 2008. Detectives in that case included Kevin Getz, Jeff Deckard, Paul Suding, Brad Stille and Stacy Brown. Their work in that case resulted in the arrest of two suspects.

Trooper Greg Day was recognized for his investigative work on several burglary cases that occurred in Lawrence County. Those cases were solved in August 2008 and resulted in 23 felony arrests.

Road update from Indiana State Police

Indiana State Police at the Bloomington Post advise road conditions remain extremely hazardous in the district due to freezing rain.”Lawrence County has declared a Level 2 Warning which means conditions are threatening to the safety of the public and only essential travel is recommended such as to and from work and emergency situations, according to ISP Public Information Officer Sgt. Curt Durnil.

Current road conditions within the Bloomington District of the Indiana State Police, which includes, Monroe, Owen, Greene, Lawrence and Brown Counties, are as follows:

*SR 37, Monroe County, has been cleared of snow but the road is still ice covered and becoming extremely slick.

*SR 37, Lawrence County is snow and ice covered and becoming extremely slick.

*SR 46, Monroe, Owen and Brown Counties, has been cleared of snow but the road is still ice covered and becoming extremely slick.

*SR 45, Monroe, Greene and Brown Counties is snow and ice covered and becoming extremely slick.

*State and U.S. Highways are snow and ice covered and becoming extremely slick.

*Secondary roads, (county roads) are snow and ice covered with two to eight inches of snow and ice cover depending on the county you are in. These county roads are extremely slick and hazardous.

“We are having a few slide-offs and crashes at this time. No personal injuries have occurred,” Durnil stated.

Motorists are encouraged to use the following cautions when driving:

*Reduce speed

*Be aware of sudden stops

* Keep distance between vehicles

*Hang up cell phones, and drive with caution

*MOVE OVER, SLOW DOWN when approaching emergency vehicles

If you should become stranded the following safety tips could save your life.

ªBefore you leave check the weather forecast and road conditions. Citizens can access road and weather information by going to our website at: www.in.gov/isp or by calling the Indiana State Police Road and Weather Line at 1-800-261-7623 (for statewide conditions).

*Always keep your gas tank full when driving in cold weather.

*Carry a winter survival kit in your car which is to include: blankets, flashlight, extra batteries, brightly colored cloth, sand or a bag of cat litter, shovel, candles and matches, non perishable high calorie foods, (nuts, raisins, and candy bars), newspapers (for insulation), a first aid kit and jumper cables.

*Do not leave your car if stranded, it is your best protection. Do not panic, an idling car only uses one gallon of gas per hour.

*Roll down a window a very small amount for fresh air.

*Make sure the car’s exhaust pipe is not blocked to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.

* At night, leave your dome light on.

*If at all possible carry a cell phone, and call 911.

New ISP trooper assigned to Greene County

Lt. Paul Bucher, Commander of the Bloomington Indiana State Police Post, announced that three recent Indiana State Police Academy graduates are now working in the area. 1191767-s1

Probationary Troopers Adam Davis, Julie Meisel, and Kent Rohlfing have been assigned to the Bloomington Post.

Davis will be assigned to Greene County for patrol duties when he finishes his field training.

Meisel will be assigned to Monroe County and Rohlfing will work out of Owen County.

Davis is a 1998 graduate of Wabash High School. He served eight years in the United States Marine Corps. During his tour of duty in the Marines, he served in the Infantry and Anti-Terrorism Units.

He resides in Linton with his wife and three children.

These probationary troopers graduated from the Indiana State Police recruit school on Dec. 18.

While at the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy, trooper candidates received approximately 878 hours of structured training in law enforcement techniques since the class began on June 15. The curriculum included 85 hours of criminal law instruction, 80 hours of vehicle operations training, and 30 hours of psychology training.

Probationary Troopers Davis, Meisel and Rohlfing will now participate in a 14-week field training program where they will be assigned to veteran trooper trainers and apply the knowledge and skills learned at the academy in field situations. They will receive their patrol cars upon successful completion of their 14-week field training program.
