LYONS — Grease is the word that has Lyons Town Council members concerned.
Specifically, a substantial amount of cooking grease, coupled with rubber gloves, medicine cups and other debris has hindered the work of a lift station near the Lyons Health and Living Center.
Now, town officials may seek to impose an additional sewer charge on the nursing home they believe is the cause, though no action was taken during Monday’s meeting.
Instead, nursing home officials will be contacted, and additional information will be sought about repair and upkeep costs on the station caused by the added grease.
Town officials believe the grease may have come from the center, said Clerk-Treasurer Kim Flynn. …<more>
Lyons Council hears debate over tree that demolished trailer

A Lyons family’s quest to determine who pays for the damages to their trailer comes down to a seemingly simple question: Tree for you, or tree for me?
In the aftermath of mid-July storms which felled the tree that demolished the trailer home of Jann and Hank Tonyan, the family approached the Lyons Town Council Monday seeking word insurers would cover the damages.
“It was an accident waiting to happen,” said Hank Tonyan, who approached the town council repeatedly over recent years about cutting the tree.
But whether the tree belonged to the town or Tonyan was hotly debated during Monday’s session. Tonyan said while he’d offered to cover half the costs of cutting the troubled tree down before the storm felled it, the town council forbade it.
“It’s a hazard we brought up to you guys through a tree expert, and you let it go,” Tonyan said.
That, he said, implies the town owned the tree and controlled its cutting. Now, he seeks restitution for the trailer’s loss, adding his insurer only intends to cover the costs of losses inside the home. …<more>

LYONS - It’s plain the drain caused some strain with the train.
Lyons Town Council members are concerned after angry words were exchanged this week with workers on the Southern Indiana Railroad line which passes through the town, a dispute which began after town employees sought to drain standing water near the tracks.
Southern Indiana Railroad officials could not immediately be reached for comment.
Problems arose, said Town Council member Daniel Grant Tuesday evening, when workers were draining standing water near the tracks by placing a hose over the rails. The move was made, he said, to clear water which might otherwise have posed a potential mosquito problem.
As a maintenance truck approached, Grant said the workers, who were standing by watching the drain hose, removed it well before the railroad workers neared the intersection. …<more>

LYONS - The town council will seek a $582,500 Owner-Occupied Housing Rehabilitation grant from the state which could be awarded by late summer.
The proposed Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority grant is intended to provide loans to low-income homeowners, Kenna Consulting representative Christi Pappano said.
Over time, those grants will be forgiven, provided the homeowner continues to reside in the renovated property.
Thus far, 22 applicants have been identified in the town, Pappano said, and income verification is ongoing.
The grant application will be submitted by July 15, and a response from IHCDA could come quickly, Pappano told the Lyons Town Council during a required public hearing on the grant proposal Monday. …<more>
