SWITZ CITY — Local residents took big advantage of a recent fee amnesty week conducted by the Greene County Recycling Center.
During the week June 7-12, fees were either reduced or eliminated for most recyclable items.
Greene County Solid Waste Management District Supervisor Erek Wilson reports the week’s effort was very successful and he has a huge pile of old vehicle tires and rollaway containers of trash to prove it.
More than 2,000 discarded vehicle tires were turned in to the recycling center.
“We have the biggest pile of old tires over here that we have ever seen,” Wilson told the Greene County Daily World.
He said the tire recycling program was made possible in part by a state West Nile grant administered by the county health department that will be used to help with commercial disposal fees.
During the week, the center also collected 11 rollaway containers of items that also included e-scrap items like computer towers and monitors as well as freon appliances such as air-conditioners, refrigerators, freezers and dehumidifiers, couches, mattresses, old furniture, and clothing. …<more>
