In 2010, the Linton Music Festival’s audience potentially went global — and many locals loved what they saw.
This weekend’s crowd for the sixth annual Fest didn’t have to be among the estimated 11,000 listening in Humphreys Park.
Some caught the shows, spread across three days and featuring 38 artists, on the first-ever Internet simulcast of the shows. …<more>

The wedding party wore sneakers.
Their wedding cake was decorated with soccer balls and ladybugs.
The groom, best man and father of the bride struck up a joking “gangsta lean” pose, throwing hand signs, straight out of a Run-D.M.C. rap video.
And on the wedding night, the groom rapped on-stage to “The Humpty Dance” with No One Zero.
Admittedly, the wedding of Doug Wilson and Stacie Tafoya wasn’t at all typical.
It was, however, still beautiful.
Many in the audience were dressed in black concert T-shirts. The rice in Music Fest cups went unthrown as cheers — and a few happy tears — filled the air as kids blowing soap bubbles filled the sky, celebrating. …<more>

If they wanted blood, they got it.
“I’m bleeding from somewhere. I don’t know where,” said Tenstrip’s singer Nick Faught, grinning at an enthusiastic Linton Music Fest crowd as his band took a brief break to allow him to fix the wound.
But even the singer’s cut couldn’t keep the Jasonville metal band down. …<more>

Look for an opportunity to get the 4-1-1 on the Linton-Stockton High School at an upcoming open forum meeting.
L-S High School Principal Nathan Moore provided details on the open session that’s slated for 7 p.m. on Sept. 7 at the high school auditeria.
“It’s an opportunity for parents or people in the community to ask questions or talk with me about what’s going on in the high school,” Moore explained. “I can give them an update on how the school year’s going. There’s a lot of things that go on and if you’re not involved directly with the school you may have questions.”
Former L-S High School Principal Nick Karazsia, who now serves as the L-S superintendent, started the open forum meetings.
“Mr. Karazsia started this as a way to connect with the community and I thought I’d follow in his footsteps,” Moore said. “I like the idea. It’s a real positive way to work with the community and a way to build relationships.” …<more>

A Linton man died Tuesday evening in a mine at Triad Mine in northern Knox County near Freelandville.
Brian Mason, 25, was driving a large surface mine truck that drove off a high wall and toppled to the ground and landing on its top about 5:15 p.m., according to Freelandville Volunteer Fire Chief Patrick Reynolds.
“He was in one of those mine dump trucks, one of those huge ones, and we don’t know exactly what happened, but he went over a high wall, somewhere between 100 and 125 feet straight down to the ground. He was trapped in it,” Reynolds told the Greene County Daily World.
Emergency crews had to cut Mason out of the truck, a process that took about 35 minutes, according to Reynolds. …<more>

In Tracy Hunt’s view, a person can never be too careful with their finances, especially their online bank and credit card accounts.
The 43-year-old Linton woman had the horrible experience last week of finding out her checking account at Crane Federal Credit Union had been nearly cleaned out after a series of unauthorized transactions were made out of Mexico using a forged debit card.
Within three days, she lost $397 to 12 separate purchases made at grocery stores and restaurants thousands of miles from her home in Greene County.
After the bogus transactions, Hunt had $14.83 left in her account. …<more>
Linton Music Festival: Provides major economic impact in community

As the sixth annual Linton Music Festival prepares to kick off Friday evening, city officials and business representatives are gearing up for a busy weekend.
Linton Mayor Tom Jones says there is no doubt that the festival creates additional business and generates tourism in the community.
“I think over the years we’ve noticed quite a bit of dollars being spent in the community. After talking to some of the business owners, it (that weekend) has made a huge impact on their businesses,” Jones said. “I think any time we do festivals like this it makes a huge impact on the area. You know it’s hard to measure tourism. Any time you bring from 5,000 to 10,000 people into a community, you know there is going to be increased sales. I think all of these festivals we do, whatever happens here is a huge tourism boom for the community. It’s all plus business and most of those are outside dollars that come in here and it’s money that probably wouldn’t be spent here locally on a normal basis.”
Jones said he appreciates the efforts of the many volunteers who pitch in to make the weekend a success. …<more>
